1 - Reflection on Previous I Search Experiences (due Thur, Mar 15)
1. What are some of the previous research projects you have done? In sixth grade, the research projects I did were Wild Wild West, Pompeii, and an enviromental issue for science. Last year, I researched modern Louisiana and another topic for social studies, and a drug for science class. This year, I've researched labyrinths, Neo-Babylon, and the morning-after pill for religion class.
2. Based on these projects, what does research mean to you? I think research means learning more about a topic from reliable sources in order to complete a project.
3. Describe one of your research successes or failures. Why was the experience positive or negative? I would say that my best research project was the one dealing with Neo-Babylon. I felt like I knew the material really well and the presentation my partner and I had put together was very good.
2 - Reflection on Webbing Process (due Fri, Mar 16)
1. I think the webbing process helped/did not help me find a topic because: I did not do this because I was absent.
3 - Why I Chose This Topic and What I Know About My Topic (due Fri, Mar 16)
1. Topic: Homer's Troy
2. Why you chose it: I know enough about it to be curious. I want to know more about it. Where was it? Where did it go? Was the whole story a myth? Who "found" Troy?
3. What you already know about your topic: I know that the blind poet Homer wrote an epic poem about the Trojan War. I know the story of the Trojan War. I also know about the wealthy German man who "found" Troy and supposedly stole Helen's jewels.
Teacher Response March 20 - Great job, and you did this all on your own! Your grade is 30/30.
4 - Pre-Notetaking Activity - in class (due Tue, Mar 20)
1. Brainstorm a list of questions related to your topic. Did Troy really exist? Was there a Trojan War? Where was Troy? Where did Troy go? Was Homer's story a myth? Who "found" Troy? Did this person steal Helen's jewels?
Fat Question: Homer's Troy - What evidence supports the historical reality?
5 - Reflections on Pre-Notetaking - for homework (due Tue, Mar 20)
1. Describe how the pre-notetaking sheet helped you find both focus for your topic and research questions to investigate. Did you find it easy or difficult to create a fat question from your ideas? Making a list of questions did help me create a fat question. I knew what I wanted to research, but I wasn't sure about the big thing that I wanted to discover. Teacher Response March 20 - good job, and you did it on your own! You rock! 20/20.
6 - Search Log (due Wed, Mar 21)
1. What have I learned today? Today I learned a little more about Troy's background (the city and the story).
2. What problems have I had? The first day, I had a problem with my Wiki page. Today my only problem was that the internet wouldn't work for more than two minutes.
3. How will I overcome the problem(s)? Mrs. Daquanno fixed the Wiki page. I restarted the computer to fix the internet problem.
4. What will I do next? I will continue to research on databases and encyclopedias. I want to make sure that I get a good background.
Teacher Response March 21 - good job! 10/10. 7 - Search Log (due Thur, Mar 22)
1. What have I learned today? I learned about different views on whether or not their really was a Troy, or a Trojan War. Most scholars believe that Troy did exsist and their is much evidence to prove that Homer's Trojan War was not a myth.
2. What problems have I had? I didn't really have any problems today. Everything went smoothly.
3. How will I overcome the problem(s)? There are no problems to overcome.
4. What will I do next? Next, I will finish searching on databases and/or in books. I want to make sure I've gotten everything I might need from these two sources before moving on.
Teacher Response March 22 - Good job! 10/10.
8 - Search Log (due Fri, Mar 23)
1. What have I learned today? Today I learned about Heinrich Shliemann and why some scholars agree or disagree with the historical evidence supporting Troy and the Trojan War.
2. What problems have I had? I didn't have any problems today. I'm glad I got all of my paraphrasing done.
3. How will I overcome the problem(s)? There are no problems to overcome.
4. What will I do next? I'm not sure. I think we're doing a graphic organizer and bibliographies in class on Monday, so that will probably be my next step.
